==== Can I have 64bit Linux installed on my Desktop PC? ==== ==== Can I have SL6 installed on my Desktop? ====
Line 6: Line 6:
Absolutely. This has been the default for a while, and the majority of linux PCs is 64bit already. Absolutely. This has been the default for a long time, and existing systems can be upgraded in place. Note that as of SL6, we only support 64bit systems, and we no longer support storing permanent data on the local disk (/usr1/scratch is gone, only /tmp is available).
Line 8: Line 8:
All it requires is a reasonably new PC (purchased summer 2004 or later). Where ''reasonably new'' means your PC is at least a Dell Precision 370 ("satyr", first purchased in Summer 2004) or a later model (Precision 380 "satyr", Precision 390 "oreade", Precision T3400 "pepe", Precision 3500 "Nomos", ...). ==== Can I install additional packages on my Linux Desktop? ====
Line 10: Line 10:
Actually, it's a valid reason to have your PC replaced by a contemporary model if it cannot run 64bit operating systems.

The 32bit variant of SL5 is still available on request, for systems with 3 GB of RAM or less only. The 32bit setup receives little testing these days.

As of SL6, we only support 64bit systems.
As of SL6, you can install packages from our repositories (only), by choosing System -> Administration -> Add/Remove Software from the menu. You can't actually remove packages, only add them. There's also a blacklist, but that's probably incomplete, so please use your judgement and don't install software that could cause problems in our environment. If there's some package that you think should be installed on all Desktops, please let us know and we'll consider it for the default setup.
