Oracle Java 7 replaces Java 6 on Scientific Linux on February 4

Sun's Java implementation version 6 will hit its end of life in February, after that, there will be no more security updates for this software.

We have decided to completely remove the old Java versions from the Scientific Linux machines on February 25, including everything from /opt/products/java .

As a replacement, Oracle's implementation of Java 7 will be installed in the 64 bit version on SL5 and SL6 on February 4, becoming the default version of Java. The Firefox plugin will be removed, as it has a long history of many security issues and isn't used by many web pages anymore.

Users can test Java 7 on the machines lx64 (SL5) and sl6.
